UWILD vs Dry Docking: Cost Comparison for Vessels in African Ports

By Wainfen Victor

Understanding UWILD and Dry Docking Options

All classed vessels require periodic underwater inspections to maintain their classification society certification. Traditionally, this meant dry-docking every 2.5 to 5 years, depending on the vessel type, age, and flag state requirements. However, most major classification societies now offer UWILD (In-Water Survey in Lieu of Dry-Docking) as an alternative that allows the underwater examination to be conducted while the vessel remains afloat and operational.

The Cost Breakdown

The total cost of a dry-docking event extends far beyond the docking fee itself. When all factors are considered, UWILD surveys represent a fraction of the cost. Below is a representative comparison for a typical 50,000 DWT bulk carrier.

Dry Docking Costs

  • Dry-dock rental: $50,000 — $120,000 per day (typically 5-14 days)
  • Lost revenue from off-hire: $10,000 — $50,000 per day
  • Towage and pilotage to/from dry-dock facility: $10,000 — $30,000
  • Accommodation and logistics for crew during docking: $5,000 — $20,000
  • Opportunity cost of delayed schedule: Variable but significant

UWILD Survey Costs

  • Diving team mobilization: $3,000 — $8,000 (depending on port)
  • Survey execution (CCTV, photos, thickness measurement): $4,000 — $12,000
  • Total UWILD cost: Typically $7,000 — $20,000
  • Vessel remains operational — no off-hire
  • No towage or logistics costs

The cost savings are dramatic: a UWILD survey typically costs 2-5% of a full dry-docking event. For a vessel that would otherwise dry-dock for 7 days, the savings easily exceed $200,000 — not including the operational disruption avoided.

When UWILD Makes Sense

UWILD surveys are ideal for vessels in good condition with no known structural issues, operating on tight schedules where off-hire time is especially costly. They are also well-suited for vessels trading exclusively in regions with limited dry-docking facilities, such as many African ports where the nearest dry-dock may be hundreds of miles away.

When Dry Docking Is Required

Dry-docking remains necessary for major repairs, scheduled coating renewal, propeller shaft inspections, tail shaft removal, and certain regulatory requirements. UWILD is not a replacement for every dry-docking but can safely extend the interval between them, allowing operators to defer the full expense and schedule the dry-docking at a more convenient time and location.

Cameroon Diving Services is authorized by BV, ABS, DNV, and Lloyd's Register to conduct UWILD surveys at 40+ African ports.
